Customize the ruler

The ruler is the bar that appears when you highlight text. This article explains how it works and how to set it up the way you like.

How the ruler appears

Highlight at least 2 characters and up to 300 words. The ruler appears above the text, or below it if there's no room. If you select more than 300 words, it shows Select up to 300 words.

To close it, hover the ruler and click the X, or press Esc.

What's on the ruler

By default the ruler shows the Bettertext logo, Improve, Shorten, Reply and More, with text labels.

• More holds the other actions: Expand, Summarize, Tone, Translate, Continue and Ask.
• The logo opens a menu with Copy text, Turn off on <site> and Bettertext settings.

Turn the ruler off

To turn it off for one site, use either of these:

• The logo menu: choose Turn off on <site>.
• The Ruler on <site> switch in the card that opens from the Bettertext toolbar icon. Use the same switch to turn it back on.

To turn it off everywhere, go to Settings and switch off Show the ruler when I select text.

Open your settings

Go to app.bettertext.ai/settings. Changes save automatically.

Choose your actions

Under Actions on your ruler:

1. Pick a preset: Compact (Improve, Shorten, Reply; the default), Standard or Everything.
2. Switch individual actions on or off.
3. Reorder them by dragging, or with the arrows.
4. Check the live preview to see the result.

Actions you don't pin stay under More.

Change how it looks

• Show actions as: Text labels (the default) or Icons.
• Ruler colours: Light (the default) or Dark.
• Hide the ruler automatically: optional. The ruler hides after a few seconds.

Set your languages and name

• Translate to: your default translation language.
• Write results in: the language for results, or the same language as your text.
• Sign replies as: the name Bettertext uses to sign replies.
