Save, reuse and review snippets

Bettertext helps you build and keep a good snippet list: it saves text you reuse, suggests a saved answer when one fits the email, and checks your list for problems.

Save text as a snippet

1. Select the text on any page and choose Save as snippet from the ruler's More menu. Under a reply Bettertext wrote, the same button is right there.
2. Bettertext suggests a shortcut that isn't taken yet. Change it if you like, and add tags.
3. Leave Sync to Apple devices on to have it on your Mac, iPhone and iPad too, and click Save.

If you insert nearly the same text for the third time, Bettertext asks Make this a snippet? and fills in the details that change, like the name, for you. Choose Not now or Don’t ask again if you'd rather not. Only fingerprints of the text you insert are kept, in your browser, and never the text itself.

Use a saved answer in a reply

When you reply to an email and one of your snippets already answers it, the reply card says Your saved answer and its shortcut fits this email:

• Use it, adapted writes the reply from your snippet, fitted to this email.
• Use as is inserts the snippet exactly as saved, with its fill-ins filled.

Above the box where you say what to write, the Snippets link lists all your snippets, with a search. Pick one to build the reply around it, or click Paste as is to insert it unchanged. Shortcuts you type in that box expand too.

Review your snippets

Lists grow messy. In Snippets, click Review my snippets and Bettertext checks the whole list for:

• duplicates and near-duplicates, which it can merge into one snippet (with variants when they differ only by a name);
• broken snippets, em dashes and messy structure;
• old prices, dates and names that may be out of date;
• risky shortcuts, ones you might type by accident;
• secrets, such as passwords or keys saved in a snippet;
• wording that could be clearer, and tags and names.

Go through the suggestions with Review one by one, or See everything to accept several at once. Nothing changes until you accept it. Your snippets are backed up before the first change, and History can undo a change, or every change from a review with Undo all from this review. You can run up to 5 reviews a day.
